چکیده

Spurred by improvements in routing technology, the architecture of the Internet is evolving. Until recently, nearly all routing took place through parallel hierarchies, in which each core Internet service provider (ISP) at the top of its own hierarchy provided other core ISP’s with routes to its own customers and customers of non-core ISP’s in its hierarchy. Based partly on the ability and incentives of some core ISP’s to deny or degrade service to others, antitrust authorities required the divestiture of internetMCI as a condition for the MCI–WorldCom merger and blocked the proposed merger of Sprint and MCI-WorldCom. Recent changes in routing standards have enabled a wider range of routing arrangements, and these evidently reduce the market power of the core ISP’s vis-à-vis their customers. We argue here that those new standards also reduce the incentives of core ISP’s with large market shares to refuse or degrade service to ones with smaller market shares. Our analysis is based on a bargaining model, which provides a means to assess how the short-run bargaining positions of various core ISP’s are affected by the new routing arrangements.

The Shapley value mechanism for ISP settlement

Within the current Internet, autonomous ISPs implement bilateral agreements, with each ISP establishing agreements that suit its own local objective to maximize its profit. Peering agreements based on local views and bilateral settlements, while expedient, encourage selfish routing strategies and discriminatory interconnections. From a more global perspective, such settlements reduce aggregate ...

A Social Network Approach for the Ranking of the Autonomous Systems of the Internet

The worldwide scale transit of information flows in the Internet is governed by trade agreements between autonomous systems; these agreements are translated into routing policies by the Border Gateway Protocol (BGP). The negotiation of these trade agreements implicitly relies on a hierarchy of the autonomous systems and the relative position of two systems leads to an agreement of the customer-...

On Interconnection Models and Strategies

1 There are two basic types of interconnection agreements between providers in the Internet: peering and transit. A decision every Internet network service provider (INSP) has to make is which other peering/transit INSPs to connect with. The potential peering/transit partners differ (obviously) in the advertised routes and they may differ quite drastically in the amount and type of costs (line ...

Emergent properties of the BT SDH network

When planning an SDH network, explicit structure, such as rings or a network hierarchy, is often imposed to allow for easier network protection and management. Decisions on node connectivity are also heavily dependent on available transmission capacity and network geography, as well as the demands placed on the SDH transport layer. The strictly imposed structure therefore makes it unlikely for ...

On Inferring Autonomous System in the Internet

-The Internet consists of rapidly increasing number of hosts interconnected by constantly evolving networks of links and routers. Interdomain routing in the Internet is coordinated by the Border Gateway Protocol (BGP). BGP allows each autonomous system (AS) to choose its own administrative policy in selecting routes and propagating reachability information to others. These routing policies are ...
